type='text'>Week 13

Artificial Limbs

I think this idea, of the possibility of controlling artificial limbs by thought alone, is wonderful. my caveat is much like what i wrote in the following post, that i have some serious concerns about other applications for this technology. but as far as using this technology to help people who need artificial limbs have better control and ease of movement and function in the world, i think that is a great thing. also, i think it's a pretty cool concept, at least when applied to this purpose, that it's even possible for our thoughts/brainwaves to be connected to a piece of technology and exert control. when used for such trivial purposes as video games, it seems really inane and wasteful and lazy to me, but in this instance, i find it refreshing for such technology to be used to improve the quality of life of people who really need it.
<img possible applications of this which i feel could harm humanity far outweigh any benefits for scientific inquiry and technological development. in general, i find myself wary of technology for technology's sake, and in this case, especially so. i do understand human curiosity, and therefore get why scientists would want to forge ahead with any possible developments on this front, but i don't think that we should. aside from the possible uses as weapons, spy equipment, etc, other potential uses for a bionic person would seem to me to serve primarily to take us further away from our humanity, from our connection to the earth and to cycles of life. these are among the things that i value most about being human, and i think that as a species, we need to be moving back towards these connections, not further away. so no bionic people, please.
Week 11

Acupuncture As Effective Energy Medicine

I would say that yes, acupuncture is very much so effective medicine. i trust in it's effectiveness to treat a multitude of ailments, illnesses, dis-eases, emotional imbalances, etc. i feel comfortable considering acupuncture to be energy medicine in that a primary focus of acupuncture is chi, which we also refer to as energy. so acupuncture works on an energetic level, moving and rebalancing our bodies' chi. but i also think that acupuncture is more than energy medicine, as it does work on a physical level as well. the needles are physically inserted, many patients will physically ingest herbs, and other techniques sometimes used in acupuncture, like cupping, also have physical components as well. so i would say that while i do agree that acupuncture is effective energy medicine, i would also say that it is effective medicine in general.

Kirlian Photography

I think that many different conclusion can be drawn from Kirlian photography, depending upon who you ask. personally, though i am looking forward to thursday's field trip and seeing what my aura looks like photographed, i am wary to say that i would draw any conclusions from it. i would probably find it interesting, and perhaps useful, and feel very open to hearing any additional information that the owner is available to share with me, be i don't know about conclusions. i do believe in the theory of kirlian photography, and am open to experiencing it for myself. so for right now, i, personally, draw no conclusions. perhaps this will change on thursday.

Human Intent As It Affects Health

I believe that intent can indeed play a significant role in health. prayer, meditation, visualizations, mantras, affirmations- i believe that all of these can have a positive impact on health, all of which do involve some form of clear and/or focused intention. cancers have and will continue to be healed by the power of believing alone, which could manifest many different ways. conversely, a patient may receive state of the art treatment, and make no improvements, perhaps because they don't believe that they will, or have a very impactful unhealed emotional wound around that part of their body. i believe that oftentimes it is some combination of intent and actual care, but i really think that if our intention is not clear, and we do not look at the emotional components of dis-ease, that long-term healing is unlikely to take place until we do. i also believe that the intention of the practioner has an impact as well, though i do believe each of us is fully responsible for our own healing. a healer's intention can further or hinder one's own intention of healing. in so many areas of life, i think that intention is powerful.
Week 10

I know I'm a living system because...

what else would i be? it seems really obvious and simple to me that human beings would be considered living systems. we are alive, we breathe, thus actively participating in the carbon cycle, we reproduce, and we are infinitely complex. on a personal level, i very much feel like a living system, whatever exactly that would feel like on a sensory level. what i mean is that my whole being feels alive, down to every last cell, and my mind, and my spirit, and my soul. i couldn't even fathom being considered any other way. when i sometimes hear people refer to themselves and/or their bodies as machines, my whole being rebels, and, even though i know people are speaking metaphorically, i believe that it is the furthest thing from the truth for my living being.

Biophysics and Oriental Medicine

i can definitely see these fields as connected. as biophysics itself is rather interdisciplinary in nature, it shouldn't seem a stretch at all to link it to oriental medicine. and because of the ways in which biophysics is interdisciplinary, i can also see it serving as a bridge in the scientific community with oriental medicine, perhaps even making the latter more accessible to the general public. in particular, its study of bioenergetics, biomechanics, channel biology, and biomolecular free energy seem particularly relevant and connected to oriental medicine. but mostly, i just think that they are largely connected by their natures- oriental medicine is very complex, in-depth, and interdisciplinary, as well as something of a cross-over, in that people are now interested in having it reach a large diversity of the population. i think a similar thing can be said of biophysics.
Week 9

My E-Prime Day

i believe that i awoke this morning at approximately 8am. i think i stayed in what i consider to be my bed for maybe 30 more minutes, trying to remember what i believe to be my dreams from the night before. when i recalled what i thought were my dreams, i attempted to interpret what i believed they possibly could have meant to me. i'm pretty sure i then pulled a tarot card in order to gain some additional insights into a possible theme or focus for what i consider to be my day. in my eyes, the card registered as the 8 of cups, which i think can be interpreted as somewhat out of balance emotions. i then remember sighing, and then recall creating what i thought to be the intention of integration and balance for what i believe to be my day.

that was actually pretty fun, and not as hard as i thought it may be, assuming of course that i "did it right". anyway, it was an interesting exercise, at least how i perceived it!

Synthesizing East and West

i do believe that this is possible. i take the assignment to mean do i think that i can synthesize east and west either within myself or within my life, rather than do i think that our culture can synthesize them. the latter i see as more of a challenge, but i truly do believe that the former is not only possible, but is very real in most of our lives. i see aimc as such a synthesis. i think that for most people, practicing chinese medicine in this country will necessarily be a synthesis, as we live in the epitome of the west. bringing an eastern system of medicine to the east will involve some level of affect for both, and i believe that the level is what may differ from practioner to practioner, also possibly dependent upon the environment and culture where one lives. in the bay area, for example, i think that it may be easier to organically synthesize and blend the best of both worlds of chinese medicine and facets of western culture and experience. whereas practicing chinese medicine in a less open minded and hearted environment may involve a dominating of the western influence, with the eastern going a bit more underground.

in my life, i attempt to balance eastern and western thought and influence within myself, and feel like i can hold the duality or seeming paradox without much effort or distress. i appreciate blending and merging and the opportunity to pull the best or most useful parts of each system and leave the rest. i believe there's something very powerful about acknowledging the beauty and gifts of both systems and schools of thought.
Week 8

Newton's 3 Law's & Me

I am really appreciating that we learned about classical physics around the midway point of this class. i found it very helpful to have a more conceptual foundation of physics- this not only helped keep me interested and engaged, but also made physics accessible to me. i think it is possible that if we started right off with thermodynamics and Newton's laws, etc, that it may have felt harder to jump right in, or even keep afloat, for that matter. so thanks, larry!

that being said, i do apprecciate Newton's laws. there's something very solid about them. i find that they provide a very useful framework for how motion works, and for how to think about motion in a new, interesting and applicable way. i would not, however, daresay that i believed these laws to be absolutely absolute; my worldview has space for the occasional exception.

Our "Energy Effecient" Culture

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed- it can only change forms. this one is a little tricky for me to wrap my brain around. why can't it be created or destroyed- or at least just destroyed? wasn't it created at one point anyway? or does the big bang theory still have the energy just changing form? i understand in theory the piece about energy changing forms, but remain unclear about why there is necessarily a finite quantity of energy in the entire universe, or perhaps just on earth. in the past when i've heard this law, my mind has followed the thread of our humanness as energy, in relation to reincarnation. if energy can neither be created nor destroyed, and our souls our energy, then they must just change forms after they leave our bodies. when thought of in that capacity, it definitely makes sense to me, and it's also very intriguing. i find pondering about what happens to our souls/spirits/energy/humanness after we die to be profoundly fascinating. in that way, our human culture is very energy efficient indeed.

Descartes

this guy had some interesting theories. interesting as in well-intentioned, but definitely missing the mark. i find it amazing that his mechanistic theories survived for so long, but i'm glad that they were ultimately replaced. it seems that as a culture we are still struggling to get over viewing the universe as dead, and separating ourselves from nature. did descartes originate these ideas and christianity adopted them into its tenets, or vice versa? christianity has definitely been a major contributor to the spreading of these ideas, whichever way they originated. it's pretty amazing in a disturbing way that we are still trying to undo one man's ideas from several hundred years ago. i am practicing trusting that on at least some level, this was a stage that was necessary for humanity's growth and development as a species. i'm glad to not be living in those times right now, though.

type='text'>Week 7

"Ordered Chaos"

I like this concept. it makes a great deal of sense to me, and feels like it's in alignment with my overall worldview. i see examples of ordered chaos throughout the universe, down to experiences in my own life. what i like about it is that chaos doesn't have to mean randomness or complete arbitrariness, if that's even a word, but rather it leaves room for things about the universe, and about ourselves, that we cannot necessarily explain. maybe it is completely random, but maybe it's part of a much larger pattern that we aren't yet able to comprehend. and as virgo, i am very much a fan of order. so i appreciate the coexistence of these two seemingly contradictory concepts: order and chaos. i find this to be both comforting to me on a human level, and also very beautiful and perfect on a more spiritual level.

Fractals

I like fractals too. i think they are absolutely beautiful and a reminder that the universe is far more complex, ordered, intelligent and profound than i am generally present to. i think they are very much patterns of complex systems. complex systems existing in the universe, as well as complex theory and phenomenon in physics and mathematics, as time gets added into the mix.
i find fractals to be both simple and complex at the same time, as well as embodying the paradoxical concept of ordered chaos. also, just looking/gazing at fractals i believe helps us access other parts of our brains/consciousness that are not perhaps our dominant ones. i find them to be a powerful meditation tool, as well as microcosms of systems in the universe as well as within our bodies. go fractals!

Consciousness out of chaos?

i'm not so sure about this one. i'm not opposed to the idea of consciousness as the electromagnetic field outside of our brains-in fact this kind of makes sense to me. however, the part about this field being the result of chaotically fired neurons seems like a big leap. or irrelevant. i think our consciousness is alive in every way, and not random or chaotic. i'm far less interested in the neurons firing in our brains than i am in how all of our human consciousness is connected, and from where in the universe does it originate. i am actually uncomfortable with limiting consciousness, which to me is divine, to the realm of neurons and brain chemistry. i believe that it is so much more than that, so much more than the sum of its neurological parts.

the cat experiment

okay, so i didn't actually use my cat. i did consider it for a minute, before realizing that my cat, schizandra, would not subject herself to being dragged around the carpet for one second. there would be scratches to show for it. but, from reading about the intention and results of the experiment, which involves static and sparks in the dark, i recalled one such experience that occurred, without any animals being harmed in the process :)
i have an older model sleeping bag that has a very soft fleece-like lining which also happens to be black. i've had the experience many times while camping with this bag while wearing my thick wool socks of sparks emanating from the bag when i moved my feet around. i found it a bit disconcerting the first time this happened, but since then have come to enjoy the sparks out in the desert or woods. just some electrons moving around!
Week 6

"Good" vibrations?

I do not believe that vibrations are inherently good or bad. i think that they are a natural occurence in the physical world, and any concept of good or bad would be subjective to human experience. for example, many people would agree that music they like consists of "good" vibrations. yet one could also find people who disliked that same piece of music, thereby deeming it "bad" vibrations. also, most people would probably consider the low-frequency vibrations which occured during the '89 earthquake to be "bad", at least folks who live around here, but i do not believe that the vibrations themselves contain any inherent moral qualities, though i would of course agree that the vibrations had devastating results. i think that vibrations are just vibrations, and we make of them what we will.

Resonance in my world

i experience resonance as a feeling of rightness, or perhaps alignment. when i meet someone who i feel connected to, or in a similar energetic place, i experience that as resonance. this is also true with values, or ideas. if someone made a comment that felt really in alignment with my own perspective or values, i might say that i really resonated with what that person just said. i think the same holds true for the shadow side of resonance, though it feels differently for me in my body. if i meet someone who may be exhibiting a shadow quality, or acting out of balance, in a way that mirrors a similar or identical quality in myself, a resonance would occur. however, i probably would experience this resonance as profoundly uncomfortable, and would most likely want to get as far away from that person as possible. i believe that both these experiences of resonance are two sides of the same coin, and i am grateful for both mirrors.

Energy and qi

since i've first explored the realms of alternative healing, i've thought that qi and energy are synonymous, or at least deeply connected. i understand qi to be life force, or the energy contained in our bodies. energy can be many things and can relate to inanimate objects as well as human beings. my understanding of energy is that when it is being used to describe the field or animating force of the human body, that this is the same as qi. so perhaps energy is a broader term, and qi is one specific kind of energy. i cannot imagine describing qi without using the word energy. to me they seem inextricably related.
Week 5

my symmetrical world

i prefer to view the world as symmetrical, while acknowledging that patterns of asymmetry and chaos exist as well. i believe that at it's core, the universe operates from a state of balance, and creates examples of this everywhere for us to see- from sacred geometry, to our own human bodies. for me, symmetry resonates on a deep level. perhaps this is because i have 4 planets in libra- i do equate symmetry with balance, wholeness, beauty and peace. it feels important for me to view the world as symmetrical. if it's not, what would that mean? chaos? randonmess? disharmony? i very much prefer, and need, on some level, to see the beauty, order, perfection, and "unbroken wholeness" of the universe, and as something to aspire to within myself. living with an artist whose paintings rarely contain any semblance of symmetry, i have definitely learned to embrace the beauty, profundity and power of asymmetry. but it does not invoke the same feelings of peace and balance and "rightness" that viewing a mandala does.

cp violation

i think that the example of cp violation from the decay of the kaon is the universe reminding us that not everything is predictable 100% of the time. one could also say that it is evidence of asymmetry in the universe, and i would agree, to the extent that it could be an example of asymmetry in a symmetrical world. i think what it really means is that anything can also be something else some of the time, especially if you keep looking.

sacred geometry and physics

yes, i believe that there are connections between sacred geometry and physics. in a broad sense, i would say that all subjects, inquiries and courses of study are connected, in that they are all attempts to understand various aspects of the universe, and are all different paths to the center.
specifically, though, sacred geometry and physics so have many things in common. one example is the math found to be used in both creating mandalas as well as by quantum physicists bears remarkable resemblence. another is the spiral. spirals have been found in numerous cultures throughout human history, they exist in the structure of our dna, and they have been found in the structure of galaxies and black holes. in addition, the inquiries of chaos theory and quantum physics both are further evidence of the connections between sacred geometry and physics.
<img width='1' height='1' days now. energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. what does this really mean, and how does it apply to my life? from what i understand, this equation means that every particle of matter contains within it a large amount of concentrated energy. the image that this brings to mind for me is a snake coiled back prepared to strike. that i understand, but what does it mean on a quantum level, for me in particular? hmm. the only thing that comes to mind is that if the big bang could be explained, or quantified by e=mc2, then all of life on this planet, and the life of the planet as well, are all related to the equation, myself included.
The Four Forces

i find it a bit odd to be comparing these "forces" in this way, as i did in class last thursday. it seems to me that attempting to unify all four of these particular areas is more of attempt to explain things about the universe that perhaps we as a species are not quite ready to understand. it feels forced and rather unnecessary to me. to begin with, i'm not really clear as to why the distinction between strong and weak nuclear force exists; why not just describe nuclear force? while i accept the distinction of electromagnetic force, i don't really get why this needs to be in any specific relationship to the nuclear force(s) (though i do remember reading about electroweak force in class, it's still unclear to me). then there's gravity. to me, gravity is even more distinct and unique than the other "forces", and is even less understandable why it needs to be in this specific relationship with the other "forces". so, how would i compare the four forces? perhaps i would say that the first three are different varieties of apples, and gravity is a turnip.
Gravity

It seems to me that the world as we know it would cease to exist without gravity. gravity is everywhere, and affects pretty much every aspect of our lifes here on planet earth. how we move our bodies, how and what we eat, our relationship to the earth- all these things are shaped by gravity. i would say that the main function of gravity overall is to inform our connection to our planet earth- to the land, the trees, the water, the mountains. how we relate to the various aspects of the earth is very much impacted by gravity, and since the gravity we experience here on earth is specific to the earth, and thus different or nonexistent on other plantets, it also would seem that gravity's purpose is specific to the earth. gravity keeps us connected to the earth, whether or not we are aware of this connection.
week 3

Connectivity

My understanding of connectivity is a way of noticing how we as a species, as all components of the universe, are somehow related. it also seems related to synchronicity, in that connectivity perhaps can be used to explain or allow for sychroncity to exist. if we are all connected from the original big bang, ie, we are all made of the same star dust, then it must make sense that this very relatedness would allow for seemingly unexplainable occurences amongst us and the universe with which we are also connected, to occur.
Personally, i do think that we are all connected, though the bit about stardust seems irrelevant to me. i think that as humans our minds are way more linked than most of us, myself included, are able to be aware of. i actually think that all life, including the planet and the rocks and the water, can be connected in this fashion. i have experienced moments of such connectivity, and would deeply love to be that in tune with the universe regularly. also, i think that as humans, coming from a place of connection, rather than separation, is going to be huge component of our healing and growing as a species.
week 3

Synchronicity

I have found so much evidence in my own life for synchronicity, especially once i became really open to it. i read all of the celestine prophecy books when i was about 21 or 22 years old, at a time in my life when i was so new to spirituality and eastern concepts and so thirsty for knowledge and wisdom and experience. so i was deeply moved and impacted by these books. it felt like they opened me right up, and invited me to explore eastern concepts/spiritual principles in a very accessible way. what i remember and what i've incorporated most from those novels into my own personal worldview is the piece on synchronicity. i hadn't ever heard of that idea before!
i resonated so much with the concept and began looking for examples in my own life, as well as inviting new experiences of synchronicity in. wow! once i opened my eyes and mind to it, i found it everywhere. i also found, similiar to working with my dreams, that once i invited synchronity into my life, once i told the universe that yes! i am willing to listen and i honor its gifts, that i entered a flow where the tap kept widening. the more i open, look and trust, the more synchronicity presents itself. i have deep trust around synchronicity, and have consistently found that if i am willing to trust and listen, there is always something there for me to learn. what a beautiful way to look at the universe, as constantly providing gifts and opportunities, rather than randomness or scientific predictability. i have all the evidence that i need!
comments on causality

i am enjoying learning and thinking about causality. i notice that i've tended to think of cause and effect in rather linear terms, ie the cause precedes and creates the effect. but now that i really think about it, i don't see why that should necessarily be the implied reality, let alone an absolute truth. i like the idea that an effect can precede the cause, or that the effect may be visible while the cause remains unclear. taken even further, why does there even need to be just one cause? i believe that oftentimes, causes can be complex and involve many factors to varying extents. additionally, perhaps causality doesn't need to be linear at all, with either cause preceding or following the effect. what if causality is circular or multi-dimensional? this class has definitely expanded my perception of what's possible around causality. i am grateful.
reflections on uncertaintly

i briefly touched on this in my last post, prior to last thursday's class. i still remain a huge fan of the uncertainty principle. i think it is absolutely brilliant, and creates so much more room for me to find physics as a subject and science accessible. i also appreciate the inquiry of scientists that much more who have room to not be absolute about the answers. really, how can we claim to be 100% certain about anything? the more i learn about myself, and the more i learn about the world around me, the more i find that i'm not certain about things i once thought i used to be, as well as how much i still have to learn.
i also enjoyed how much easier is was to embrace the uncertainty principle from the eastern perspective. it seems as though there is so so much more room for not knowing in the eastern view, than the need to create absolutes. how humbling it must be for some western scientists to have to admit or embrace that they cannot calculate everything in the universe all the time with 100% accuracy.
quantum mechanics

i read the article about the origins of the atom. interestingly, as i was reading it, i had a moment where i thought i was doing my chemistry reading rather than physics. in my mind, these were two separate classes, and two different subjects. but i can see now how connected they are, and how some basic physics is dependent upon basic chemistry. how holistic! really though, i am appreciating the interconnectedness and merging, if only occasionally, of my two current courses of study.
as for the article, what i appreciated most was learning about the uncertaintly principle. it's great to hear scientists admit that perhaps not every last molecule in the universe is measurable and accounted for. it makes physics seem more spacious for me, and that principle also reminds me of the eastern philosophies we looked at last class.
reflections 5/1- the meaning of time

I found this class and topic to be very interesting. I am really enjoying looking at physics from a more conceptual perspective, and getting to think about a subject like time and share my thinking with my classmates. I appreciate having both western and eastern viewpoints represented, and enjoyed comparing and contrasting. My group was representing the western perspective, and at first I found it a bit challenging to advocate for that position, as my own personal views and values are more closely alligned to the eastern perspective. But it was a good exercise, and I found that I was able to present arguments or theories from the western perspective without needing to agree with it. In fact it may have been easier, because what's established by way of scientific thinking out there is western, and that's all backed by scientific "evidence". While I may agree with most of the eastern perspectives, I noticed that it was harder to back up an argument or theory. It's more philosophical, or intuitive, and doesn't necessarily translate into scientific thinking. Hmmm.

I found the article about adjusting the world's clocks to be interesting. I hadn't heard about that, and honestly am not sure what I think about it. One second here and there over the past thirty something years doesn't really seem like a big deal. Yet somehow it does seem relevant. Is the earth really slowing down? Is it a question of our human calculations and creation of time? Perhaps we calculated the earth's rotation incorrectly. Maybe this is an example of humans attempting to measure and calculate something that just isn't quite measureable, and the universe is simply reminding us of that with the clocks being off by a second.

physics quiz answers 5/1

I have been drawn to Chinese Medicine, and many others forms of alternative healing for many years, largely in the context of being a patient. I love how ancient the system of TCM is, as well as the eastern philosophies- how the body, mind and spirit are looked at holistically and inherently interconnected, rather than separately functioning parts that make up the whole.
For almost 2 years I've been a student of ba gua chuan, a Chinese martial art which is very much steeped in TCM wisdom and philosophy. This practice has hugely transformed and influenced my life, and has largely been a catalyst for my choosing to study Chinese Medicine. I believe that my study of Chinese Medicine and my study of ba gua chuan are mutually beneficial and very much connected.

From a purely theoretical standpoint, I do find physics to be anywhere from interesting to fascinating. My practical experience with physics, in my senior year in high school, was heavily math and formula focused, which I found to be very challenging and rather boring. From my own pespective on the universe, I am wary of absolutes, and do not necessarily agree with all of the laws of physics all of the time. I believe that pretty much anything is possible, and that laws and absolutes can limit or stiffle possibility. Also, I sometimes prefer to simply marvel at the beauty, wonder and profundity of the universe, and think that in attemting to classify, experiment upon, and comprehend every detail, so much gets lost in translation. Perhaps we are not meant to understand everything scientifically.

I have definitely experienced shifts in my perception of time, including time both slowing down and speeding up. I've also had experiences which felt like they existed outside of time, or perhaps in another time. The latter experiences have occurred for me in sacred ritual space, numerous times over the years.
